Onyx lessons

August 31, 2023

I decided to save $160 and assemble my Priority Onyx myself. It wasn't just the money; I do need to develop my bike mechanic skills.

I am learning and developing, but it's not been easy.

CUES

August 23, 2023

Finding bike parts is hard enough, but when Shimano introduces a whole new line that will up-end about a third of their existing product, and it's not even available for purchase – holy flat tire, Batman.

Truly a pain in the keister

ebb-and-flow

August 4, 2023

Planning a trip that is far in the distance, as opposed to everything that needs to be done today and tomorrow, means a lot of starts and stops. At least for me.
Of course, a 90-day bike adventure may have it’s starts and stops, but it’s also a long journey that can only be done a day at a time, a mile at a time.
But if I don’t keep moving, I’ll get nowhere.

itinerary – at last

July 25, 2023

My original plan got scrapped when I realized it was going to be during the heat of summer and typhoon season. I’ve finally got a basic route for the new trip in the spring.
Lots of time to explore, soak in hot springs, enjoy the cherry blossoms, and just relax. The riding should be pretty enjoyable, especially since I won’t have to rush myself.

new ideas, new toys

July 23, 2023

This is the kind of stuff I drive myself a bit bonkers with. I can picture The Ultimate Touring Bike; I can also picture me on my Half-Assed Trucker. Which is so unfair to the Trucker. But that’s what the allure of New and Shiny can do.
I have a feeling I’ll end up opting for for good enough and save my money for other things.

maybe … walking?

June 8, 2023

After watching a YouTube of someone hiking a heritage trail in the mountains, I had the crazy idea of a walking trip. No bike to worry about, just stroll my way across Japan for 90 days.
And I’d see about one-tenth as I will by bicycle.

first summery ride, going shopping

April 27, 2023

I’ve been doing my shopping by bicycle for years. One of my major reasons for using panniers and not a backpack.
This was a good ride on a good day. It got me thinking positive thoughts for the future. That can be a dangerous thing.

first big ride

April 21, 2023

I’m not in great shape (yet), so a big hill climb on a less than jolly day was a tough ask. I came out ok, however. Very encouraging.
And another ride, another thought about how to tech-up my bike.
